This is a serious problem. Don’t do it.
Every time I see hardcore shippers complain that Mashima’s taking a sadistic delight in torturing them, I want to say:
It’s not just your otp.
Mashima trolls and/or neglects every single pairing in Fairy Tail at some time or another.
Elfever and Gale have had barely any moments in ages.
Well, from what we can see in RM, Mashima definitely had the end pairing in mind from the start. And it wasn’t until the end it became canon. It’s the same here. I think we should just kick back, relax and enjoy the ride. I think there’ll be several stages for canonity of the pairings.
ElfEver is essentially canon now since they’re really the only one who’s gone out on a date of sorts with the intent of them going alone to Ryuuzetsu, but somehow, the rest of the guild had the same idea.
BacCana is also 90% canon as they’re going out together as drinking buddies. They’re definitely dating and yet not dating at the same time.
I can definitely see this arc going like: Bacchus and Quattro Puppy come and help the guild and then when Cana’s in danger, Bacchus tries to save her by covering her from an attack, only to be saved by Gildarts, and….. he is not pleased to see Bacchus (accidentally) groping his baby girl. Yes, I cannot wait for the epicness that is Gildarts raging over his daughter’s boyfriend.
JerZa: Need we say more? He likes her, she likes him but they both know a relationship isn’t possible right now. It’s really part of the only 3 confirmed canon now.
Now, here is where things get interesting.
GruVia: Well, I’m not much of a shipper for this ship just yet, so what I’m about to say may be biased. The way I see it, this pairing is just too one-dimensional. We only get to see it more from Juvia’s “Love-Love vision” and not from Gray. That, and the constant fangirling irks me. But however, things could change with this arc (Silver) and the upcoming omake.
Gray is going through a tough time right now. But Juvia doesn’t know that. If you look at the other girls, particularly Lucy and Erza, both are sensitive enough to understand and figure out what their partners are thinking/feeling. If something’s off with them, they just know it and try to help them through it.
This is a key flaw in Juvia’s character: she doesn’t have the kind of emotional maturity that Lucy and Erza have. Gray’s main problem is that he’s afraid of others dying for/because of him. His major guilt complex about Ultear doesn’t help either. The real question is, is Juvia sensitive enough to pick up the poker face Gray’s putting up?
This could change with the omake. If the GruVia omake will be about Juvia learning to pick up the signs that something is wrong with him. Then that shows that Juvia is developing her emotional maturity.
That, and considering this arc is going to be big for Gray (hello, Silver), then I can see this arc solidifying their canon status.
GaLe & NaLu
This is the one that interests me the most. Considering how central the DS are to the plot, I think these two will be the last to become canon. Not only that, if StiYu shiptease is to be believed, then I believe that the DS pairs will be the last to become canon. Mashima is saving the best for last because of how plot-relevant these ships are.
I just want to address the Gruvia portion of this. You say that Juvia not being aware of what Gray is going through is a key flaw in her character, and yet she was the ONLY one to notice Gray’s mood after what happened with Ultear. SHE was the one who got him to smile again, even though she had no idea why he was in this state (and how could she?). When she first addressed him, he brushed her off, saying it was nothing. And even until now, he still has told NO ONE what happened to Ultear. He’s kept it all inside and has shared the event and his feelings over it with nobody, not even his closest friends.
And it’s not the first time he has done something like this. It wasn’t until all the Galuna Island arc events that Gray finally told Erza and the rest about Ur and his past. How many years had gone by? And how close was Gray to Erza and Natsu, etc? And yet they had no idea about any of these things. Was it because they weren’t emotionally mature enough to realize Gray had trauma in his past?
OR perhaps this is GRAY’S flaw, that HE needs to overcome?
You can’t force someone to open up and share when they don’t want to. You can’t drag something like that out of a person. Is Juvia suppose to guess that Ultear sacrificed her youth, and in effect brought Gray back to life, and he now feels guilt and fear over this? How could she possibly know what happened, and address this problem, if Gray doesn’t open up to her first? We don’t even know if he ever told her about Ur, so she might have no idea about these past events, let alone this recent one that’s weighing on his heart.
So, yes, I would say you are biased in this matter, as your logic is flawed. You’ve put this all on Juvia’s shoulders, and are expecting her to be a mind reader.
IMO this is Gray’s lack of emotional maturity, and his bad habit of keeping things bottled up that HE needs to change. Juvia can only do so much on her own. He needs to meet her in the middle. She clearly wanted to talk to him about what was bothering him during the homecoming, but he shut her down immediately. That’s why she ended up taking the tactic she did, and it worked regardless, since he did feel better. Hopefully he will start opening up to her more in the future. Mashima has gone out of his way within the story again and again to show that they have a special, and close bond together.
And as Gray has absolutely no romantic development with any other character within the story, and the same with Juvia, if they do end up with anyone, it will obviously be with each other. Mashima isn’t even subtle about them anymore. ^^
I’m right there with you. Like you said, I don’t expect everyone to ship Gruvia, or to even like it at all. But, it’s amazing the tunnel vision some people have when it comes to this ship. It’s frustrating, because it is almost ALWAYS Juvia that’s wrong. It’s almost ALWAYS she who needs to change so she can “deserve” to be with Gray. For most people, Gray is practically perfect as he is, and she is the problem in the ship. Why?
I don’t think Juvia is perfect. And I don’t think Gray is perfect. And especially in this case, where it’s obviously Gray who has the issue here. So, to see his problem of bottling things up being blamed on Juvia, when she was the only one who made things a little better for him, and was the only one to acknowledge he was hurting, is just ridiculous.
